25 April, tens of thousands turned out for the Anzac Day ceremonies around New Zealand to mark the anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli and to remember fallen servicemen and women today. One hundred years ago, in 1916, Anzac Day was marked for the first time.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. It is also one of the iconic New Zealand constrictions like Sky Tower, Harbour Bridge, Beehive (complex houses of NZ Parliament), etc.
The Auckland War Memorial Museum located in the Auckland Domain and resembles a grand ancient temple.
Under its impressive glass and copper dome located the finest collection of Maori and Pacific Island treasures and also tributes to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars.
Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history, natural history, as well as military history.
Following the war, subscriptions were raised to construct the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Architects Hugh Grierson, Kenneth Aimer and Keith Draffin, all of whom had seen active service during the war, won a competition for the design.
Prime Minister Gordon Coates laid the foundation stone on 1 August 1925. The fine classical-style building was opened by Governor-General Sir Charles Fergusson on 28 November 1929. The Auckland Cenotaph in the court of honour in front of the museum was consecrated on the same day.
