On Monday 25 April New Zealand commemorate 100 years since the first Anzac Day service. During that day people honour the soldiers who fought at Gallipoli and other conflicts in which New Zealand has been involved.
Anzac Day, on April 25, is the anniversary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli during World War I in 1915. The Australian and New Zealander soldiers were part of an Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula. Close to 3000 New Zealand soldiers died during the eight-month Gallipoli campaign.
Anzac Day has been a public holiday in New Zealand since 1921.
The date 25 April marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers – the Anzacs – on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At the end of the campaign, Gallipoli was still held by its Turkish defenders.
Thousands lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign: 87,000 Turks, 44,000 men from France and the British Empire, including 8500 Australians and 2779 New Zealanders.
Since the Gallipoli landings rose a feeling that New Zealand had a role as a distinct nation.
