2016 year marks the 75th Anniversary of the foundation of our Navy.
On 1 October 1941, His Majesty King George VI approved the designation “Royal New Zealand Navy” for the regular element of the New Zealand Naval Forces (with Reserve and Volunteer Reserve elements appropriately titled.)
So the date is being celebrated with a programme of commemorative events and activities – collectively named Operation NEPTUNE.
Ships from Australia, Canada, Cook Islands, Chile, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Samoa, Singapore, South Korea, Tonga, and the United States arrived to Auckland helping the Navy to celebrate its milestone.
Vessels have been berth either at Ports of Auckland (Captain Cook Wharf, Queens Wharf, Princess Wharf, Wynyard Wharf) and Devonport Naval Base.
The New Zealand Navy featured HMNZS CANTERBURY, OTAGO, WELLINGTON, TE KAHA, TE MANA, ENDEAVOUR, and MANAWANUI, as well as two inshore patrol vessels, a P-3K2 Orion and two Seasprite helicopters.
The full list of vessels includes:
CNS Yang Cheng (China), USS Sampson (US), HMNZS Te Mana, Bark Esmeralda (Chile), ROKS Chungbuk (Republic of Korea), HMNZS Manawanui, INS Sumitra (India), RSS Resolution (Singapore), HMAS Darwin (Australia), HMNZS Otago, HMNZS Hawea, HMNZS Te Kaha, HMNZS Endeavour, HMNZS Taupo, HMAS Dechaineux (Australia), JDS Takanami (Japan), HMCS Vancouver (Canada), KRI Banda Aceh (Indonesia), CIPPB Te Kukupa (Cook Islands), VOEA Pangai (Tonga), SPB Nafanua (Samoa).
One of these events is an Open Day where ships from friends and allies were open to the public to have a walk around certain parts of the vessel.
It was a beautiful sunny day for Aucklanders to enjoy the event. So see below photos from The Royal New Zealand Navy – 75 events.
