Auckland’s’ ASB Tennis Arena hosts the annual ASB Classic every summer as part of the Women’s Tennis Association and Association of Tennis Professionals international events.
The tournaments are very important for local economy, attracting more than $10 million each year via visitors stays in local hotels, spending at restaurants, local attractions and shopping.
Current requirements to host Woman's Tennis Association and Association of Tennis Professionals tournaments are a venue capacity 3500 spectacles which is 500 more than the arena currently holds. The upgrade will centre on replacing two stands to boost the venue's seating capacity to 3500.
Auckland councillors approved a $5.5 million funding package to upgrade the central city's ASB Tennis Arena at a committee meeting in March 2019.
The stadium upgrade will involve redeveloping two stands to ensure the arena has enough seating capacity to secure hosting future tournaments. The redevelopment of the stadium is important for the growth of tennis in the country.
Previous plans also included installing a retractable roof, but currently it has been suspended until more funding to be found.
Construction started in the beginning of April and to be completed in November this year.
