Last year, at October 2016 marked the 75th Anniversary of the foundation of New Zealand Navy.
On 1 October 1941, His Majesty King George VI approved the designation “Royal New Zealand Navy” for the regular element of the New Zealand Naval Forces (with Reserve and Volunteer Reserve elements appropriately titled.)
So the date is being celebrated with a programme of commemorative events and activities – collectively named Operation NEPTUNE.
Ships from Australia, Canada, Cook Islands, Chile, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Samoa, Singapore, South Korea, Tonga, and the United States arrived to Auckland helping the Navy to celebrate its milestone.
Vessels have been berth either at Ports of Auckland (Captain Cook Wharf, Queens Wharf, Princess Wharf, Wynyard Wharf) and Devonport Naval Base.
The New Zealand Navy featured HMNZS CANTERBURY, OTAGO, WELLINGTON, TE KAHA, TE MANA, ENDEAVOUR, and MANAWANUI, as well as two inshore patrol vessels, a P-3K2 Orion and two Seasprite helicopters. The full list of vessels includes:
