Sevilla have been crowned Europa League champions after coming from behind to beat Liverpool in Basel.
Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break with a stunning effort with the outside of his boot, but that was as good as it got for Liverpool.
But Sevilla came out for the second half rejuvenated. They gathered together in a huddle before the restart, shouting at each other, geeing themselves on.
Just 17 seconds after the restart Moreno made a real mess of a header and the ball went straight to Mariano Ferreira. So Ferreira tore down the flank into the space left unguarded by Moreno and cut the ball back for Kevin Gameiro to fire in the equaliser from close range.
Kevin Gameiro is one of the key players of Sevilla. The France striker has made his best season at the club since joining from Toulouse. He scored 28 goals in his 50 appearances, including six in his last five games.
Sevilla got advantage in the game and it simply was a matter of time before they scored again. Vitolo drove forward from midfield, exchanged passes and then Spanish midfielder Coke did the rest with a brilliant curling 64th minute shot into the far corner.
Then, in the 70th minute, came the game’s moment of controversy. The ball flashed across the Liverpool box, it ran to Coke at the back post and he fired in past Mignolet. But up went the linesman’s flag only for Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson to overrule him. This ensured that Sevilla won the game.
Sevilla retain the Europa League and make it an incredible three in a row, five since 2005.
Sevilla won the trophy for a record fifth time and coach Unai Emery created his own piece of history. Emery became the first manager since Liverpool’s legendary Bob Paisley to win a European trophy in three consecutive seasons.
Liverpool fans were simply in tears at the end of the game.
Liverpool looked lethargic in the second half, they ran out of legs, they looked tired.
The loss means Liverpool will not play in Europe next season, having finished the Premier League in eighth and seeing the Champions League berth reserved for the Europa League winners got to Sevilla.
