Aucklanders came to Auckland Domain to Celebrate Chinese New Year at the 2016 Auckland Lantern Festival. The Festival started Thursday 18 and finishes Sunday 21 February. The festival moved to a new venue this year – the Auckland Domain. Auckland Domain itself is great place to relax, but now it has absolutely miraculous look with a flavour of Chinese culture.
Over the course of the festival, the organisers expect more than 200,000 people to come and enjoy the best of traditional and contemporary Chinese culture. Which include roaming and main-stage performers from New Zealand and China, martial arts displays, arts and craft stalls, food stalls showcasing delicious, authentic Chinese cuisine. And at the final - expect a great fireworks!
Preparations for the Festival took about nine months. So what you will see there:
• The spectacular illumination of over 800 handmade Chinese lanterns
• Camels, polar bears and dinosaurs were lit up in lantern form - as well as traditional Chinese symbols, flowers and people.
• A street full of stalls selling delicious Asian delicacies and crafts
• Lantern making demonstrations
• Stunning on-stage performances of traditional and contemporary Chinese culture including martial arts, dance and live music from international performers.
Come and enjoy New Zealand’s largest Chinese festival. All those 800 handmade Chinese lanterns illuminate celebration of Chinese New Year and welcome the Year of the Monkey.
